Enrichment Activites

 

Qigong
Wednesdays 5:30 - 6:30 p.m.

Sessions: June 12 - 26 & July 10 - 24
$20.00/session or $7.00 drop in
Instructor: Steven Ridley

Qigong (“chee-gung”) is health-enriching meditative art.  Qigong practice includes gentle moving postures and stretches, quality breathing and internal focusing, which combine to promote vitality and healing, while restoring peace of mind.  Qigong is a transformational health-enriching practice that is enjoyable and easy to learn.

A variety of routines will be experienced, which are suitable for beginners and experienced practitioners alike. If need be, qigong may be modified individually for comfor tand current capacity to include seated practice if preferred.

Steven Ridley has enthusiastically shared qigong and meditation methods for 35 years.

Belly Dancing
Thursdays 5:30 - 6:30 p.m.

Sessions: June 13 - 27 & July 11-25

Belly Dancing can be an effective aerobic workout! This enriching dance style includes creative self-expression and interpretive dancing to music.  Belly dancing is an empowering movement art that often enriches self-esteem and improves one’s poise.  Belly dancing can be a joyous celebration as well as a meditative experience.  It is an energizing and aesthetically beautiful involvement, which can be enjoyed privately at home, with others, or performing.

Lia teaches belly dancing at Metropolitan State College of Denver, Colorado as well as public classes.  She also performs with “The Divine Gypsy Troupe” in the Denver area.

 

Beginning Argentine Tango - Lesson & Practice
Saturdays, lesson
2:00 - 2:30 p.m. followed by supervised practice dancing until 4:00 p.m.
$5.00 drop in
Instructor: George Fosmire

This will be an ongoing weekly review of basic concepts of the Argentine Tango with emphasis on a different topic each week. Drop ins welcome.

 

T’ai Chi - Free with Annual Pass

Tuesdays 5:30 - 6:30 p.m., Thusdays 9:00 - 10:00 a.m., & Saturdays 9:00 – 10:00 a.m.

Instructor: Darren Villeneuve

T'ai chi combines slow, flowing movements, guided relaxation and body awareness to improve the health of the mind, the spirit and the body. It is suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels. Join us for a calming, centering and empowering experience. Darren has been studying and sharing his enthusiasm for this art for over twenty years.

 

Do Re Mi by the Sea
Fridays   10:00 - 11:00 a.m.
10-week session: April 5 - June 7

Ages: Birth - 6

We at Do Re Mi by the Sea offer a childhood music and movement program for children and the adults who love them. Our curriculum provides hundreds of familiar and unique songs and musical activities. Our classes are relaxed, playful, and are stimulation for you and your child. Sign up and bring your little "Treble" maker to our music class!

Debbie is retired from a nursing background. Her interest in music and dance goes back to her early teens when she learned to play guitar and loved to sing folk songs. She sang in Sweet Adelines, was secretary for a local music club, violinist in a small weekly music group, and participated in several dance programs.

 

Aqua Zumba
Mondays   8:00 - 9:00 a.m.

Instructor: Shannon Rackowski

Zumba, the Latin-based dance and exercise phenomena has taken its moves to the water.  Like its land counterpart, Aqua Zumba is fused with all the great Latin beats and sounds, and is pinched with flavors of hip-hop, country, rock, soul, and other ethnic music.  Zumba in the water takes on a whole new environment: tempo, range of motion, center of gravity, body weight (10%), and of course, the water’s protective quality with less impact to joints or injuries of an individual.  Aqua Zumba will be taught by Shannon Rackowski who has more than 25 years experience in the fitness industry.

 

Women’s Roller Derby
Thursday 5:30pm-7:30pm
Sunday 1:00pm-4:00pm


Ro
ller Derby is a fun group activity that can provide a great cardio workout.
(Personal protective equipment is recommended).

 

Pickleball
Monday through Friday
Open Pickleball (for more competitive players): Noon-1pm
Senior/Novice Pickleball (for beginners and those 62+): 1:30pm-2:30p

Pickleball is a combination of tennis, badminton, ping pong (table tennis), and racquetball and is played in the small gym at the Recreation Center. It is fast-paced, easy to learn, and FUN for all ages! It is also a great way to exercise and meet new people.

 

Recreational Open Skate
Saturdays 12:30 - 2:00 p.m.*

Daily Admission + $1 Skate rental


Bring the whole family down for skating in the small gym.  Skate sizes are limited so bring your own roller blades (soft wheels and no brakes) or skates if you have them. 


*Recreational Skate may be cancelled due to a private rental.  Call 541 265-7783 to confirm open skate.

 

Geocaching

What is geocaching? It is an electronic treasure hunt. All it requires is a GPS device and access to the internet. There are several caches hidden in and around Newport City Parks and public areas. Learn more about this up-and-coming sport at geocaching.com and enjoy geocaching in Newport.
